Announcements
As we enter African Heritage Month 2026, community members are warmly invited to join in a month of celebration, reflection, and connection across Antigonish and StFX.
Throughout February, African Heritage Month offers an important opportunity to honour the history, culture, contributions, and ongoing leadership of People of African Descent in Nova Scotia and beyond. A full month of events has been thoughtfully organized under the leadership of Lorraine Reddick, Manager of the Agnes Calliste Centre, and Akua Amankwa-Poku, Black Student Advisor, in partnership with community and university collaborators. We are deeply grateful for the work that has gone into shaping this programming.
Events will take place across the month, beginning with the Town of Antigonish Flag Raising on January 30 at 10:00am in Chisholm Park, followed by the African Heritage Month Launch on February 3 in Mulroney Hall. The month continues with a series of gatherings, performances, and campus programming, including the African Heritage Month Basketball Game on February 6 at 6:00pm and the virtual Black Excellence Panel on February 24 at 7:00pm. Registration for the panel will be available soon on the StFX website.
We are also very pleased to share that Tia Upshaw will be joining our community for two special initiatives in early March. On March 3 at 6:00pm, community members are warmly invited to take part in a Community Vision Board Project, held in the Appleseed Court Community Room. This gathering will offer space for reflection, creativity, and collective goal-setting. For further details, please contact Lorraine Reddick at @email.
In addition, Tia will be engaging with StFX students and high school students from the Strait Region, creating opportunities for youth-focused learning, mentorship, and empowerment.
We look forward to continuing to build strong connections between campus, community, and youth during African Heritage Month and beyond.
