Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a StFX Major Scholarship?

StFX Offers many application-based scholarships to incoming direct-from-high school students. The application period runs from December 1st to March 1st, and a copy of the application form can be found here.

Can I hold both a Major Scholarship and National Entrance Scholarship at the same time?

Unless otherwise noted in your Major Scholarship offer email, students are not eligible to hold both a National Entrance Scholarship and Major Scholarship at the same time. When a student qualifies for multiple StFX Scholarships, we issue only the highest value award to their student account. Please note that this policy does not extend to StFX Bursaries, StFX AFAs, or any externally awarded scholarships.

I received a National Entrance Scholarship offer in my Admissions package; how do I accept that?

Entrance Scholarship offers that are communicated based on in-progress high school transcripts are “conditional”, meaning that a student needs to provide a final high school transcript before an official offer can be made. Final offers are made based on the entry average taken from a student’s final high school transcript; and thus the value may be higher or lower than the conditional offer provided in a student’s Admissions Acceptance package.

What is financial need?

For scholarships which consider financial need as part of the eligibility criteria, consideration is given to:

  • Family Income
  • Number of dependents supported by Family Income
  • Number of dependents attending university in the upcoming year

A section will be available on the scholarship application form to provide any additional context you wish to share.

How is my scholarship average calculated?

Scholarship averages are calculated using the five required courses for admission to your program of choice. For in-progress transcripts, Grade 11 marks will be used when no Grade 12 mark is available. For more information on course requirements, click here.

What should I expect if I was awarded a StFX Scholarship?

Official scholarship offers will be sent to students via the personal email we have on file from their admissions application. Application-based scholarship offers are sent out beginning in April, with final National Entrance Scholarship offers communicated in July once final transcripts are on file. Within the scholarship offer email, students will be given a link to an online scholarship acceptance form. Scholarship values will be posted to student accounts prior to Welcome Day in September. Please note that 50% of students scholarship posted will go towards fees owed in September and 50% of the scholarship posted will go towards fees owed in January.

How do I thank the donors?

We appreciate your willingness to thank the donors; it means a great deal to them to hear from their recipients. As part of the Scholarship Acceptance Form that students complete prior to their first day of studies, students will be asked to provide a brief statement to the donor of their award.

What happens to my scholarship offer if I defer my acceptance?

If a student receives a StFX National Entrance Scholarship, their award can be deferred to the following January at half the annual value, or to September of the following year at full value. To remain qualified for their award, a student can complete no more than six undergraduate credits during their deferral/gap year period.

If a student receives an application-based StFX Major Scholarship (including Schwartz, Public Policy & Governance, and Deveau), they will not be able to defer their scholarship. The student will be eligible to apply again for a future year as long as they do not take more than six credits at another post-secondary institution during the deferral/gap year period.

What should I expect if I have met the renewal criteria?

Students who meet the renewal criteria for their scholarship will be notified via email as part of automatic assessments completed by the StFX Scholarship Office. The email notification will include a short acceptance form for the student to complete. Once the acceptance form is complete and the student is registered in the required number of courses for the upcoming school year, the award will be applied to student accounts prior to the first day of classes in their next academic year.

What should I expect if I have not met my scholarships renewal criteria?

If scholarship renewal criteria has not been met the student will be notified by email, this is an automatic process completed by the StFX Scholarship Office. The email notification will include a link to an appeal request form for students who wish to appeal their non-renewal decision. First-year students who do not qualify for renewal will be re-assessed at the end of their second year of study. If renewal criteria still has not been met by the end of the Fall/Winter term of a student’s second year, the scholarship will be revoked.

What happens to my scholarship if I am studying abroad?

How students who participate in an exchange via the Education Abroad program are assessed for scholarship renewal upon their return to StFX depends on whether the exchange was for one or two terms of study:

  • Single Semester Exchange: Students who participate in a single-term exchange (Fall/Winter terms only) will qualify for renewal provided they:
    • Meet the average criteria for their award against a minimum of 12 credits earned during the semester they spent studying at StFX.
    • Have successfully completed the exchange semester.
    • Provide a complete transcript from the host institution confirming that the coursework completed denotes full-time studies.
  • Dual Semester Exchange: Students who participate in a dual-term exchange (Fall/Winter terms only) will qualify for renewal provided they:
    • Have met the average criteria for their award against a minimum of 24 credits earned during their previous school year, provided they spent both the Fall and Winter semesters at StFX.
    • Have successfully completed the exchange semester.
    • Provide a complete transcript from the host institution confirming that the coursework completed denotes full-time studies.
What happens to my scholarship if I an enrolled in the StFX Co-op program?

Students that participate in the StFX Co-op program that have scholarships will be assessed for renewal of their scholarship as well as a StFX In-course scholarship provided they meet the following criteria;

  • Maintain an overall 80% average at StFX for the term they are studying at St Francis Xavier University.
  • Are enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits for the term they are studying at St. Francis Xavier University.
How do scholarships work for Engineering student that will only be studying at StFX for 2 or 3 years?
