"Almost Like the Blues" - Public Lecture in Halifax on Leonard Cohen and St. Paul by Matthew Anderson of StFX Religious Studies
Prophets of Love book cover, with a statue of the apostle Paul wearing a fedora

What: Public Lecture "Almost Like the Blues: Leonard Cohen and the Apostle Paul"
Where: Atlantic School of Theology Chapel, 660 Francklyn St, Halifax
When: Sept 23, 7pm
Who: Dr. Matthew Anderson, Gatto Chair of Christian Studies, StFX University

Matthew Anderson's book "Prophets of Love: The Unexpected Kinship of Leonard Cohen and the Apostle Paul" (McGill Queens, 2023), shortlisted for the 2024 Vine Jewish Studies Award, traces historical and literary connections between two Jewish thinkers separated by millennia. Anderson explores Leonard's and Paul’s mysticism, their subversive Judaism, their fascination with Jesus, their countercultural perspectives on sex, their ideas about love, their alternative masculinities, their ambiguous relationships with women - and reliance on women patrons, and how their legacies continue to evolve and be re-interpreted. Anderson disseminates contemporary Pauline studies, which situates Paul first and foremost within (never against) early Judaism, while shedding new light on the biblical worldviews and literature inspiring every line of Cohen’s lyrics.

Anderson's current research project as Gatto chair, "Behind Every Man," explores the alternative masculinity of ascetic Church Father, Jerome, and the ways that his self-curated reception overshadows Paula, who seems to have provided most of the brains, brawn, and bankroll behind the Saint.
